A quickdraw (also known as an extender) is a piece of climbing equipment used by rock and ice climbers to allow the climbing rope to run freely through bolt anchors or other protection while leading. The straight gate carabiner is clipped to the protection; a bent gate is used for the rope. Quickdraws are manufactured with either a solid carabiner gate or a wire carabiner gate for its lighter weight.

Black Diamond Hotwire Quickdraw is an excellent climbing quickdraw both as a first quickdraw and as a quickdraw for more experienced people.

Composed of two new carabiners with the wire lever, hot forged to make them super light and resistant. The surface has also been enlarged to extend its duration on both the rope and rock side carabiners.

The tape that connects the two carabiners is in 18 mm thick nylon, excellent for working on your projects.

There is also an integrated internal clip to block the rotation of the carabiner on the rope side: it will always remain in the correct position.

Design

The Black Diamond Hotwire Quickdraw is standing out by its looks and is certainly a well thought and designed product. Black Diamond, is using a mat coating on this quickdraw that as brand new product looks really nice, but the neat look is going to fade away since the first use when using this quickdraw for outdoor rock climbing activities.

The thick nylon that connects the two carabiners, is also well thought and design, and the stitching is orange (on black nylon), which makes the carabiner easy to identify while climbing.

Internal Clip

The Black Diamond Hotwire Quickdraw, like many other quickdraws is using an internal clip to block the rotation of the carabiner.

Usability

The Black Diamond Hotwire Quickdraw has a notch that can snag on the rope, particularly when seconding steep sport routes. Not only can snag on the rope, but also the upper carabiner, can snag on the bolt. This makes the quickdraw a bit difficult to use while unclipping the rope or removing the quickdraw from the bolt.

In addition, sometimes, I get in trouble unclipping the quickdraw from my harness. This, happens mostly, when I am in the limit of my climbing skills and I need to clip the quickdraw soon.

From the other side, with the wire gates, the Black Diamond Hotwire Quickdraw is very easy to use while ice climbing or for winter mountaineering.

Care & Maintenance

Climbing gear must not come into contact with corrosive materials such as battery acid, battery fumes, solvents, chlorine bleach, antifreeze, isopropyl alcohol or gasoline. After contact with saltwater or salt air, always rinse and dry textile products, and rinse, dry and lubricate metal products.
