Wild Camping at Kerkini Lake

Wild camping, an adventurous way to immerse oneself in nature, has long been a cherished dream for outdoor enthusiasts. While Greece generally prohibits wild camping to protect its fragile ecosystems, there are instances where careful and discreet camping can be done without inviting any trouble. Kerkini Lake, offers a rare opportunity to experience wild camping in Greece, provided one follows responsible practices and seeks hidden spots away from public view.

While camping is not officially allowed around the lake, there are hidden spots where visitors can discreetly pitch their tents without attracting any attention. One such ideal location is the Agios Athanasios chapel, situated at a slightly higher elevation than the lake.

Camping near Kerkini Lake Agios Athanasios chapel offers several advantages for those seeking a wild camping experience. Firstly, being situated at a higher altitude helps campers avoid the excessive humidity that often prevails around the lake’s shores, making for a more comfortable and enjoyable stay.

Furthermore, moving away from the lake’s immediate vicinity reduces encounters with nighttime creatures such as frogs, mosquitoes, and snakes that tend to become more active during the night along the lakeshore.

    1. Thank you, Diana!

I’ve been quite busy over the past few months, so I haven’t had the chance to travel to new places.

However, I just returned from a wonderful road trip through Northern and Northeastern Greece. I explored the regions of Macedonia and Thrace, including the beautiful Rodopi Mountain range.

Once again, thank you so much for your kind comment.
