Wooden bridge above Vistinski Vir Waterfall in Pelister National Park

Hiking to Vistinski Vir Waterfall from Capari – Pelister Mountain, Bitola – North Macedonia (family friendly)

On the northern slopes of Pelister Mountain, the traditional village of Capari is home to Vistinski Vir Waterfall. While many hikers make their way to the better known trails around Dihovo, this quieter route offers a different experience. It winds through peaceful woodland, follows crystal clear mountain streams, crosses charming wooden bridges, and ends at a beautiful waterfall surrounded by lush forest.

During our road trip through North Macedonia, we used Bitola as our base for exploring Pelister National Park and its surrounding villages. Vistinski Vir was one of the hikes that immediately caught our attention. The trail is short and easy to follow, making it suitable for almost everyone, yet it still feels wonderfully secluded. Apart from the sound of running water and birdsong, the forest is remarkably quiet, creating the perfect setting for a relaxing walk in nature.

If you’re visiting Bitola and want to escape the crowds for a few hours, this hike is an excellent choice. Combining traditional village scenery, shaded forest paths, and a picturesque waterfall, Vistinski Vir is one of those places that proves you don’t need a long or demanding hike to enjoy the natural beauty of Pelister Mountain.

Hiking to Kapejnci Waterfall from Dihovo – Pelister Mountain, Bitola – North Macedonia (family friendly)

One of the reasons we chose Bitola as our base during our North Macedonia road trip was its location. Sitting on the southern slopes of Pelister Mountain, Bitola offers direct access to one of the country’s oldest national parks while still providing all the comforts of a lively city filled with cafés, restaurants and history.

We intended to spend several days exploring some of Pelister National Park‘s best hiking trails, visiting mountain lakes, alpine viewpoints and remote forests before continuing our road trip.

Only one day after arriving, we came to know that authorities had announced an official prohibition on entering large parts of Pelister National Park because of the extreme wildfire danger. With temperatures soaring and forests becoming increasingly dry, the Forestry Authorities closed access to protect both visitors and the mountain itself.

Although disappointing, respecting these restrictions was never a question. The mountains will always be there, and protecting them comes before reaching another summit.

A short but incredibly rewarding walk from Dihovo to the crystal clear waters of Kapejnci.

Hiking the Beli Iskar Eco-Trail – Rila Mountain, Bulgaria (family friendly)

After completing one of the most iconic hikes in Bulgaria — the Seven Rila Lakes hike — it was time to explore another gem hidden in the heart of Rila Mountain: the Beli Iskar Eco-Trail. Unlike the high alpine hike to the glacial lakes, this trail offers a more family-friendly, forested route that follows the Beli Iskar River through a valley of dramatic cliffs, dense pine forests, and a series of charming wooden bridges.

The eco-trail is less demanding but equally rewarding, making it the perfect continuation of a hiking trip in Rila for those looking to enjoy nature in a calmer and more accessible way.

Hiking in Zagori – Villages and Stone Bridges – Greece (family friendly)

Having completed one of the most exciting trekking trips in Tymfi, we decided to explore a bit further the area and specifically the Zagori villages.

Zagori, is a region and a municipality in the Pindus mountains in Epirus, in northwestern Greece. The seat of the municipality is the village Asprangeloi. It has an area of some 1,000 square kilometers and contains 46 villages known as Zagori villages (or Zagorochoria or Zagorohoria), and is in the shape of an upturned equilateral triangle. Ioannina, the provincial capital, is at the southern point of the triangle, while the south-western side is formed by Mount Mitsikeli (1,810m). The Aoos river running north of Mt Tymfi forms the northern boundary, while the south-eastern side runs along the Varda river to Mount Mavrovouni (2,100m) near Metsovo.

Hiking at Methana Volcano – Greece (family friendly)

Last few months, I was mainly focused on sport climbing and mountaineering routes, though, finally once again I hit the trail for a great hike to the Methana Volcano.

Geologically speakingMethana is a very interesting region: a long time ago, it was very volcanic and nowadays, it counts  no less than 32 ancient craters. One can also see some ancient lava flowsbut it is the volcano located in the north-west, not far from the village of Kameni Chora (burned village), that is the most spectacular witness of this volcanic past – over here, one can really imagine oneself in a  true landscape of volcanoes.

Hiking in Kilada – Patima Park – Ermionida (family friendly)

It has been quite some time ago since I have last visited the area of Ermionida and this time, besides climbing in the wonderful location of Caves of Franchthi, I also had the chance to visit a great trail that was created by the municipality of Kilada.

Kilada is a picturesque traditional fishing village located in Ermionida, not far from Kranidi and Ermioni.  The small village is famous for its traditional shipbuilding and boat construction yards.  The boatyards still continue to make and repair traditional wooden fishing boats, as well as maintaining modern luxury yachts for the residing yachting community.

Hiking in Cape Tainaron Matapan Southmost point of Greece

Cape Tainaron – Hiking to the southernmost point of mainland Greece (family friendly)

In this blog, most of the visitors come to read my various mountaineering, climbing and hiking activities in the mountains of Greece, but this time, I will post something a bit different. Greece is mostly famous for the history, mythology and of course for the splendid seaside and the blue waters. This post is dedicated to the southmost hike one can do in Greece, hiking to Cape Tainaron (Tenaro).

Cape Tainaron separates the eastern Laconian Gulf from the Messenian Gulf in the west. It is believed that it took its name from the mythical son of Zeus, Taenarus, who built a town named Taenarum after himself. At this region, a cave network was believed to be an entrance to Hades; the gate to the Underworld.

Wild Camping in Lake Doxa (family friendly)

Lake Doxa is an artificial lake in western Corinthia, Greece. It is situated at an elevation of 900 m, in the municipal unit Feneos, near the village ancient Feneos. Construction was completed in the late 1990s. It is fed and drained by the small river Doxa, which empties into the plain of Feneos. In the heart of the lake on a small peninsula features a small church of Agios Fanourios. The Saint George Monastery in Feneos was relocated to higher ground, north of the lake. The lake is surrounded by pine forests.

We have already been in this location several times either for an overnight or as a starting point for several hiking and mountaineering activities.
