Witnessing a Firefighter Helicopter’s Water Pickup at Kapnofyto Lake
As I basked in the serene ambiance of Kapnofyto Lake, something truly unexpected and thrilling unfolded before our eyes. Out of nowhere, a loud rumble pierced the calm air, and we spotted a massive firefighter helicopter approaching. It was a rare and exhilarating sight, as this was no ordinary helicopter—it was on a critical mission. A wildfire had erupted on the Bulgarian side of nearby Mount Orvilos, and the helicopter had come to the small, pristine lake to replenish its water tank.
The lake’s intimate size meant we had a front-row seat to this awe-inspiring operation. The chopper hovered just above the water’s surface, its powerful rotor wash creating ripples across the lake. With surgical precision, the pilot dipped a large hose into the water, and we watched in amazement as the helicopter’s tank rapidly filled. The sight was both dramatic and captivating, a juxtaposition of the peaceful lake setting against the urgency of the firefighting effort.
The entire process, from the helicopter’s graceful descent to its swift departure, left us in awe. Witnessing such a close-up view of a crucial operation was an unforgettable experience, adding an unexpected thrill to our tranquil stay at Kapnofyto Lake.

Wow, that would be a neat thing to witness! That’s too bad about the fires, though. We’re dealing with those here as well. Hopefully they don’t get too out of control.
