Forclaz MT500 Air Inflatable Trekking Mattress Review

Approximately a year ago, I encountered some complications with the sleeping pad I had been utilizing for the preceding years, as it began to experience deflation issues from the valve. While the Klymit V-Static mattress initially proved to be a commendable choice with an exceptionally high R-Value, which I had acquired during a promotional offer, the product served me well during its years of use. However, due to the malfunctioning valve, I found it necessary to seek a replacement, ultimately opting for the Forclaz MT500 Air inflatable trekking mattress.

First off, this mattress is incredibly lightweight, weighing just 510g, and it folds up into a compact 1.7-liter package, which made it easy to carry around during my hiking trips.

The Sleeping Pad

Inflating the mattress is easy, and the adjustable bi-valve system allowed me to customise the firmness to my liking. In order to fully inflate the Forclaz MT500 Air I need about 8 times to blow air within the adequate valve.

Something that I really like and enjoy from Forclaz MT500 Air is the anti-slip silicon pads on the top surface. Those anti-slip silicon pads keepmy sleeping bag in place, so I dodn’t have to deal with constant sliding and repositioning during the night.

One thing I would have liked to be different, about the MT500 Air is its R-Value of 1.5. It’s perfect for temperatures above 8 °C, making it great for summer camping, though is not suitable for the cold autumn expeditions or my winter mountaineering activities.

R-Value

Before we dive into the specifics, let’s explore the concept of the R-Value. The R-Value measures the thermal insulation of a mattress, determining its ability to retain heat and prevent it from escaping to the cold ground. With an R-Value of 1.5, the MT500 Air is ideal for temperatures above 8 °C, making it perfect for those pleasant summer adventures. Τhough in my opinion is not suitable for the cold autumn expeditions or my winter mountaineering activities.

Anti-Slip Design

Say goodbye to slipping and sliding during your slumber! The Forclaz MT500 Air is equipped with anti-slip silicon pads strategically placed on the top surface. These innovative pads keep your sleeping bag in place, ensuring you stay comfortable throughout the night without constant adjustments. One thing I would have liked to see as an upgrade, is to have similar anti-slip pads also at the bottom of the sleeping pad, in order to avoid the slight slide between the sleeping pad and the bottom of the tent.
