Through-Hike in Voutsikaki – Agrafa Mountains

Following up our trip to Agrafa and our ascent to the Five Towers peaks we decided to have a through-hike to the Voutsikaki mountain which is above the lake Plastira. Voutsikaki mountain is one of the highest peaks of the Agrafa region, in fact is 2.154 meters high.

Agrafa is a mountainous region in Evrytania and Karditsa regional units in mainland Greece, consisting mainly of small villages. It is the southernmost part of the Pindus range.  The Agrafa region is famous for its complete autonomy throughout the entire 400 years of Ottoman Turkish occupation of Greece. The word agrafa literally translates to unwritten which means unregistered or uncharted; because the Ottomans were unable to conquer this region, the area and its population were not recorded in the Sultan’s tax register. As a result the people were usually free to conduct their business and customs as they pleased without Ottoman influence.

Our ascent started from the Karamanoli Ski Centre lake where also the shelter of EOS Karditsas is located. We had a quick steep ascent up to 1.800 meters above sea level and after that we where moving almost always between 1.500 and 1.700 meters above sea level.

Once we have reached the 1.800 meters peak, we had a small 5 minutes break for refuelling and after that we traversed towards Voutsikaki peak, 2.154 m. This traverse was easy but with stunning alpine green fields.

Through-Hikers traverse

After Voutsikaki, the descent started towards the village of Kerasia. We had to hike through various terrains, forests full of wildlife, springs of water, waterfalls etc. It was extremely nice to be able to experience so many different landscapes in a single day through-hike.

Once we have reached the village, we have had the time to prepare our dinner, set up our tents and to enjoy good company of other through-hikers.
