Geraneia Mountains & Sanctuary of Hera

Mount Geraneia is a mountain range in Corinthia and West Attica, Greece. Its highest point is the peak Makryplagi, elevation 1,351 m. It covers the northern part of the isthmus between the Gulf of Corinth and the Saronic Gulf. It spans 5–10 km from north to south and 30 km from east to west.

The geography of Geraneia includes forests in the south, the west and the northern part at an elevation of under 900 to 1,000 m. Barren land is in the central part. The grasslands and some bushes lies to the northwest. Farmlands and some barren land lies to the south.

The name of the mountain dates back to ancient times. During the Peloponnesian War, the Corinthians and their allies occupied the heights of Geraneia and marched to Megara with a large force.

We have started our trail from the village Pissia. We followed the signs of the path for about 12 km towards the top of Geraneia.

After reaching the top, we moved back to our cars and from there we drove for about 10 minutes to the Sanctuary of Hera in Louraki, Pera Chora.

Information from Wikipeadia:

The Heraion of Perachora (Greek: Ηραίο Περαχώρας) was a sanctuary of the goddess Hera situated in a small cove of theCorinthian gulf at the end of the Perachora peninsula. In addition to a temple of Hera of unusual construction and antiquity, the remains of a number of other structures have also been found, including a L-shaped stoa, a large cistern, dining rooms, and a second potential temple. The Sanctuary of Hera at Perachora is 14.2 kilometres (8.8 mi) north-northwest of Corinth and 75.9 kilometres (47.2 mi) west of Athens. Although there is debate between Argos, Megara and Corinth, the sanctuary was probably under the control of Corinth, as it faced the harbors of that powerful city across the Corinthian gulf. Cult activity at the site continued from perhaps the 9th century BCE to 146 BCE, when the Roman general Mummius sacked Corinth during the war with the Achaean League.

    1. Hi and thanks for the comment.

The trail is very easy and well signed and most of all it offers stunning views!

Though, if you would ever visit this trail, I would advise to not do it during summer time cause it can get rather warm over there.

      Again, thanks for your comment

      1. Definitely during Spring or Autumn is the best period of time.

Even during winter time, weather conditions in that part of Greece are rather mild.

If you need any further info of that area and/or GPX tracks, I would be happy to share them with you
