After spending two incredible days high in the alpine zone of Pirin Mountain, surrounded by jagged peaks and pristine alpine lakes, we decided to descend back into the valley and visit the charming town of Bansko. Known as one of Bulgaria’s most vibrant mountain towns, Bansko also serves as a gateway to many hidden natural wonders. Just a short drive from the town lies Saint Nicholas Waterfall (Vodopad Sv. Nikola), a tranquil oasis tucked into the forest, offering a refreshing escape and a glimpse into the raw beauty of Pirin’s foothills.

How to Reach Saint Nicholas Waterfall
Reaching Saint Nicholas Waterfall is straightforward, whether you are staying in Bansko or the nearby village of Dobrinishte.
By Car:
From Bansko, follow the E79 road south toward Dobrinishte. After approximately 5 km, turn right at the signposted road to the waterfall. Continue until you reach the small parking area near the trailhead. From here, it’s a short and easy hike to the falls.
By Foot / Hiking Connection:
Adventurers can also reach the falls on foot directly from Bansko or Dobrinishte. Both routes take you through mixed forest, with occasional clearings that open up to views of the Pirin slopes. The path is marked, and within less than an hour, you will hear the gentle sound of rushing water announcing your arrival.
Hiking to Saint Nicholas Waterfall
The hike to Saint Nicholas Waterfall is short, family-friendly, and incredibly rewarding. The trail meanders gently through dense forest, where the air is cool and fresh even on a hot summer day. Along the way, wooden steps and small bridges help you navigate steeper or rocky sections, making the path accessible to most visitors.
As you approach, the soothing sound of water becomes louder until the waterfall finally reveals itself. Cascading gracefully over mossy rocks and surrounded by lush greenery, Saint Nicholas Waterfall is about 10 meters high. The surrounding area feels like a natural amphitheater, inviting you to pause, take photos, or simply sit and enjoy the refreshing spray.
A short climb above the main waterfall reveals additional smaller cascades hidden higher in the gorge, perfect for those who want to explore a little further. Nearby, a small shrine dedicated to Saint Nicholas adds a spiritual touch to the place, reminding visitors that this site has long been considered special by the local community.
Whether you visit in spring, when the snowmelt creates a powerful flow, or in late summer, when the water is calmer but the forest is alive with green, the waterfall always offers a serene and revitalizing experience.

About Bansko
Bansko is far more than just a ski resort. Nestled at the foot of the Pirin Mountains, it is a town that beautifully blends history, culture, and nature. The old town charms visitors with its cobbled streets, stone houses, and traditional taverns (mehanas) serving hearty Bulgarian dishes and local wine.
In recent years, Bansko has also become a hub for hikers, climbers, and digital nomads alike, thanks to its strategic location and growing mountain culture. The proximity to natural wonders like Saint Nicholas Waterfall makes Bansko an ideal base for both alpine adventures and peaceful day trips in nature.
