Simond Rock 20 Climbing Backpack Review

For avid readers of the Olympus Mountaineering Blog, it’s no secret that I’m deeply immersed in various outdoor pursuits, with a particular fondness for general mountaineering activities ranging from Trad and multi-pitch climbing up to Winter Mountaineering ascents. Engaging in such adventures demands gear that effortlessly combines functionality, durability, and a lightweight design.

Having previously owned and reviewed the Simond Alpinism 22 and The North Face Verto 27 Summit Series, my recent experiences led me to reconsider my gear choices. Unfortunately, the latter, The North Face Verto 27, proved to be unreliable with numerous manufacturing faults, prompting the need for a reliable and budget-friendly replacement.

Initially, my intention was either to have The North Face replace the Verto 27 or to facilitate repairs. Regrettably, despite the apparent manufacturing issues, The North Face declined both options with an air of arrogance. This disappointment is particularly disheartening in an age where environmental consciousness and moving towards zero waste are paramount, or at lease this is what major brands claim. It’s disconcerting that a prominent brand like The North Face opted to adhere strictly to a two-year warranty policy instead of taking responsibility for rectifying a product with evident manufacturing faults.

Therefore, and upon careful consideration and mainly without the wish to break the bank, I came to the conclusion to purchase and try the latest rock climbing backpack by Simond, the Simond Rock 20.

The Simond Rock 20 Climbing Backpack is crafted with input from seasoned athletes to meet the demands of challenging climbs. In this review, we’ll delve into the features, design, and performance of this 20-liter backpack, unveiling why it stands out in the world of climbing gear.

Design & Materials

Produced from high-quality materials, the Simond Rock 20 boasts a main fabric of 160 denier polyamide ripstop with a polyurethane coating. This combination ensures durability and resistance to the wear and tear encountered during climbing expeditions. The inner fabric, also 100% Polyamide, contributes to the backpack’s robust construction.

The design incorporates a thin removable foam built into the back, with an outer mesh component for enhanced breathability. The ultra-light mesh straps with stiff reinforcements at the top prevent twisting, while the height and width-adjustable chest strap ensures a secure fit. The removable hip belt adds to the backpack’s flexibility, making it easier to access the harness when climbing challenging mountaineering routes.

Fit & Perfomance

Climbing comfort is prioritized in the Simond Rock 20, evident in its breathable mesh back and ergonomic straps. The adjustable and removable hip belt, along with height-adjustable chest straps, ensures a snug fit that prevents straps from slipping off the shoulders during ascents. The backpack’s flexibility is further enhanced with a detachable belt, catering to individual preferences and needs.

Packability & Transportation

When it comes to packability and ease of transportation, the Simond Rock 20 backpack is a game-changer. One standout feature is the removable inner foam, a thoughtful addition that allows climbers to customise the backpack’s structure based on their needs. This not only contributes to a personalised fit but also plays a crucial role in the backpack’s packability.

The real ace up its sleeve, however, is the backpack’s ability to transform into a compact and portable form. The entire pack, thanks to its ingenious design, can be effortlessly stored within the front small zipped pocket. This feature not only speaks volumes about the backpack’s versatility but also makes it an ideal companion for climbers who value efficient packing and easy transportation.

Imagine the convenience of having your climbing essential neatly tucked away in a small zipped pocket, ready to be unfurled for your next ascent. This design choice adds a layer of practicality to the Simond Rock 20, ensuring that it seamlessly integrates into the dynamic lifestyle of climbers who are always on the move.

Disadvantages

In my humble assessment, it seems that Simond could have taken additional strides to enhance the rope-stabilizing features of the backpack. This aspect, in my opinion, reveals a slight oversight in the design of the backpack. While undoubtedly tailored for the nuances of pure rock climbing, it would be a welcomed refinement to see additional attachments, specifically for hiking sticks and, perhaps, technical ice-axes.

The lack of specific side provisions for stabilising the rope on the backpack stands out to me as an area where the design could use some additional attention. While there is a central strap that provides a baseline level of security, climbers frequently face the challenge of effectively securing their ropes during the approach hikes. Introducing additional features tailored for this purpose could significantly enhance the overall functionality of the backpack.

Moreover, incorporating attachment points for hiking sticks or technical ice-axes would be a thoughtful inclusion. Such additions could expand the backpack’s utility, catering to climbers who engage in a spectrum of activities beyond just rock climbing. The incorporation of two minor straps to accommodate these tools seems like a feasible enhancement, without significantly affecting the overall weight or cost of the backpack.
