Skopje – Olympus Mountaineering

On the northern slopes of Pelister Mountain, the traditional village of Capari is home to Vistinski Vir Waterfall. While many hikers make their way to the better known trails around Dihovo, this quieter route offers a different experience. It winds through peaceful woodland, follows crystal clear mountain streams, crosses charming wooden bridges, and ends at a beautiful waterfall surrounded by lush forest.

During our road trip through North Macedonia, we used Bitola as our base for exploring Pelister National Park and its surrounding villages. Vistinski Vir was one of the hikes that immediately caught our attention. The trail is short and easy to follow, making it suitable for almost everyone, yet it still feels wonderfully secluded. Apart from the sound of running water and birdsong, the forest is remarkably quiet, creating the perfect setting for a relaxing walk in nature.

If you’re visiting Bitola and want to escape the crowds for a few hours, this hike is an excellent choice. Combining traditional village scenery, shaded forest paths, and a picturesque waterfall, Vistinski Vir is one of those places that proves you don’t need a long or demanding hike to enjoy the natural beauty of Pelister Mountain.

One of the reasons we chose Bitola as our base during our North Macedonia road trip was its location. Sitting on the southern slopes of Pelister Mountain, Bitola offers direct access to one of the country’s oldest national parks while still providing all the comforts of a lively city filled with cafés, restaurants and history.

We intended to spend several days exploring some of Pelister National Park‘s best hiking trails, visiting mountain lakes, alpine viewpoints and remote forests before continuing our road trip.

Only one day after arriving, we came to know that authorities had announced an official prohibition on entering large parts of Pelister National Park because of the extreme wildfire danger. With temperatures soaring and forests becoming increasingly dry, the Forestry Authorities closed access to protect both visitors and the mountain itself.

Although disappointing, respecting these restrictions was never a question. The mountains will always be there, and protecting them comes before reaching another summit.
