Nestos River: Wild Camping and Hiking at Galani River Beach

During this year’s road trip through northern Greece, the Nestos River area was high on my list of places to explore. Located between Thrace and Macedonia, this region is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty, with the Nestos River serving as a natural border that cuts through lush landscapes and towering cliffs. I had heard so much about its pristine environment and the range of outdoor activities it offered, so I was eager to experience it firsthand.

To make the most of my visit, I reached out to a local climber Chris, who is well-versed in the hidden locations of northern Greece. After a quick chat, he recommended the perfect spot for an overnight stay—a secluded area by the river that offered both tranquility and access to the refreshing waters of Nestos. Chris provided detailed directions on how to reach this hidden paradise, and with that, my plan was set. Little did I know, this spontaneous decision would lead to one of the most memorable experiences of my trip.

Nestos River, It’s not just one of the country’s largest rivers, but also a natural border that offers a stunning landscape, perfect for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Recently, I had the pleasure of exploring this extraordinary area, spending a night at Galani River Beach followed by an invigorating hike and an unforgettable kayaking experience on the Nestos River.

Arriving at Galini River Beach

Just 12 kilometers outside Xanthi, I found myself surrounded by the serene beauty of the Nestos River. As I approached Galani River Beach, the lush green banks and the steep rock formations created a tranquil environment that felt far removed from the hustle and bustle of city life. The gentle sound of the river flowing and the symphony of birds in the background set the perfect tone for an overnight stay in nature.

Morning Hike Along the Nestos River

The next morning, I woke up to the first rays of the sun filtering through the trees and the gentle sound of the river. After a quick breakfast, I set out on a hike along the Nestos River, eager to explore the area further.

The trail was well-marked and led me through some of the most picturesque landscapes I’ve encountered. The dense greenery, the towering cliffs, and the occasional glimpse of the river below made for a captivating hike. As we walked, we felt a deep connection to the land—a sense of peace and solitude that’s often hard to find in more populated areas.
